The travel sector is no exception in an era of artificial intelligence (AI) reshaping industries at lightning speed.
Recently, we sat down with John Lyotier, the founder of Travel AI, at the Skift conference in New York to discuss the transformative role of AI in the travel space, the challenges of rebuilding a business post-pandemic, and what the future holds for short-term rentals and the travel industry at large.

The Travel AI Vision: Merging Travel and Technology
John describes Travel AI as the intersection of the world’s largest industry—travel—and the most disruptive technology of our time—AI.
"We like to say we fuse the largest, greatest industry in the world, which is travel, with the most disruptive technology on the planet, AI"
The company collaborates with over 400 consumer-facing brands, including industry giants like Vrbo and Expedia, to drive booking demand.
"We’re good at spinning up new brands and launching new sites… For example, our brand ‘Perfect for Weddings’ identifies properties ideal for weddings using AI, highlighting their unique features such as large lawns or beautiful venues"
By harnessing the power of AI to process data, Travel AI creates content that resonates with travelers, helping them find properties tailored to their needs.
"It used to be that data-informed content, but now data is creating it. The more content we have, the more travelers we attract and the more data we gather. This cycle—the content-traveler-data loop—is only getting faster"
Adapting to a Rapidly Changing Industry
Innovation in AI moves so fast that what’s groundbreaking today might feel outdated in a few months. John excitedly highlighted this constant evolution.
"It used to be that data-informed content, but now data is creating it. The more content we have, the more travelers we attract and the more data we gather. This cycle—the content-traveler-data loop—is only getting faster"
This feedback loop is fueling Travel AI’s growth, enabling the company to stay ahead in a competitive market.
Rebuilding Post-Pandemic
Travel AI’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. John’s previous company, Left Travel, thrived until the pandemic struck in 2020, bringing revenues to zero and forcing the company into bankruptcy.
"When the pandemic happened, the company we built over the previous decade went to zero… Officially into bankruptcy in August of 2020,” However, he and his team saw an opportunity to rebuild. We acquired all the assets of the predecessor company… There were terabytes of valuable search intent and transactional data sitting in servers. We’ve gone from zero to several hundred million in gross booking value in just three years of growth"
This resilience highlights the importance of leveraging existing resources and staying adaptable during tough times.
Short-Term Rental Regulation Challenges
As Travel AI grows, it faces external challenges beyond technology—the increasing regulation of short-term rentals. From Vancouver to New York, blanket bans and restrictive policies impact property availability.
It’s a huge mistake. It’s well-intentioned by regulators heavily influenced by the hotel lobby
He believes these short-sighted policies harm smaller, underserved communities where hotels aren’t an option.
In regions like British Columbia’s interior, there are no hotels. You stay in cottages or cabins. Over-regulation not only limits travel options but also drives up costs for travelers. My recent stay in a regulated market was much more expensive because of these rules
John emphasizes that short-term rentals offer unique experiences that hotels simply can’t match, making them vital to local tourism.
AI Agents and the Future of Travel
John envisions a seismic shift in how travelers discover and book experiences.
We think there will be a massive shift to loyalty to agents—AI agents—not travel agents, but AI systems that understand your hopes, dreams, wants, and desires. The more content, travelers, and data we gather, the faster this loop runs. That’s the key to staying ahead as AI transforms the industry, - he predicted.
Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
For budding entrepreneurs inspired by Travel AI’s journey, John’s advice is simple yet profound:
“Start. It’s so easy to start now,” he encouraged. “Failures lead to new opportunities. If you don’t start, you’ll never get there. There are businesses everywhere. You just need to act on your ideas."
he said, that identifying new opportunities even in everyday scenarios, such as considering launching a lubricant business while driving behind an industrial truck.
The Bottom Line:
Travel AI exemplifies the intersection of innovation, resilience, and vision. As AI continues to disrupt the travel industry, companies like Travel AI are leading the charge, ensuring travelers can explore the world in smarter, more personalized ways.
Whether providing traffic for large travel sellers or reshaping how we think about loyalty in the travel space, Travel AI is a company to watch. And if John’s journey is any indication, the best is yet to come.
